Chemistry Objectives

Lesson 1

6.1 Given simulations of a specimen, lab request, procedure, reagents and blood gas analyzer, students will be given the opportunity to demonstrate the ability to:
6.1.1. compare advantages and disadvantages, where appropriate, of current methodologies to include: principle of analyses, limits of sensitivity and linearity, specificity, interferences, turn-around-time, cost, etc.

6.1.2. evaluate specimen integrity in terms of type, quantity and quality

6.1.3. perform preventive maintenance and calibration on instruments

6.1.4. perform sample preparation and pH, pCO2 and pO2 analysis on appropriate test samples

6.1.5. evaluate quality control results

6.1.6. determine appropriate corrective action in response to instrument malfunction and quality control failures

6.1.7. verify calculations of test results

6.1.8. evaluate patient test results to include a review of the procedural analysis, correlation of results to previous test results, correlation of results to other available laboratory results, and correlation of results to clinical pathology.

6.1.9. determine sources of discrepancy in patient test results, taking appropriate action as needed
6.1.10. record calibration, quality control and patient results

6.1.11. communicate with appropriate members of the health care team to include requesting clarification of unexpected test results, verification of patient preparation or sample collection for suspected discrepancies and reporting final test results according to accepted practice for routine, emergency and critical values.
